Volkswagen Tires: Frequently Asked Questions
Having the right tires is essential when maintaining your Volkswagen’s performance and safety. We understand that choosing the perfect tires can be overwhelming at Cherry Hill Volkswagen, so we’ve compiled this FAQ section to assist you. Here, we’ll answer your most common questions about VW tires, from selecting the best options for your vehicle to knowing when it’s time for a replacement. Whether you’re looking to enhance handling, improve fuel efficiency, or maximize ride comfort, our team at Cherry Hill Volkswagen is here to guide you every step.
When does Volkswagen recommend replacing tires?
We recommend replacing tires that are six years old and older. A tire should also be replaced when the tread on the tire is worn down to 2/32 of an inch and the tread wear indicator appears.
Tires age even if they are not being used. Physical and chemical processes reduce tire strength and performance and cause them to harden and become brittle. Old tires can fail suddenly and without warning.
Is there a way to display the pressure of each tire in my vehicle?
This depends on the type of tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) your vehicle is equipped with. Our vehicles are built with either direct or indirect TPMS.
If your vehicle has direct TPMS, the vehicle continuously monitors the pressure in the tires through sensors located in each of the tires. Individual tire pressures are shown within Vehicle Settings in the Infotainment system and within the instrument cluster.
If your vehicle has indirect TPMS, the vehicle uses wheel speed and other vehicle sensors to determine if there is an abnormality with tire pressure and alerts you with a yellow indicator light Yellow TPMS warning light in the instrument cluster. In this case, the individual tire pressures are not available, and the function cannot be added to the vehicle.
If you’re unable to determine the type of TPMS your vehicle has, you can contact our service department.
Where can I locate the required tire pressure for my tires?
The correct tire pressure for the tires fitted on your vehicle at the factory can be found on a label on the driver’s door jam.
Additional information on the tires can be found in your owner’s manual
Should I maintain higher-than-recommended air pressure in my tires to get better fuel economy?
You should only inflate your tires to the recommended pressure listed on the label found on the B-pillar of the driver door. Underinflation or overinflation may shorten the service life of your tires and affect the handling of the vehicle.
Can I change the size of the tires on my vehicle?
Your tires were carefully selected to match your vehicle. Only a tire size that is shown on the “Tire and Loading Information” label on the door of your vehicle (or listed in your owner’s manual) is recommended for use.
Only use tires with the same design and as close to the same construction, size, and tread pattern as possible on all four wheels. Never use tires whose size exceeds the measurement of tires that are approved by Volkswagen.
If I replace one tire, is there a minimum recommended tread on the other three tires?
For detailed information about the tire replacement and tread depth recommendations, please see the ‘Tire’ section in your owner’s manual. It is important to remember that tires should be replaced in pairs, rather than individually. We recommend working with a Volkswagen dealer on any tire or part replacement on your vehicle.
