Both of these engines include an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel-drive, although you can upgrade to all-wheel-drive.
FWD Tiguan models are rated at 22/29 mpg, while the all-wheel-drive is estimated at 20/27 mpg instead. VW Atlas models with the base engine are rated at 21/24 mpg, with all-wheel-drive changing it to 20/24 mpg. However, the V6 is estimated at 17/23 mpg with FWD and 16/22 mpg with AWD.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan can tow up to 1,500 pounds, while the VW Atlas has a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan models include room for either five or seven passengers, while the Atlas is configured for six or seven across three rows. Three-row Tiguan models contain 12 cubic feet of room behind the back row, 33 cubic feet behind the second seat and a total of 65.7 cubic feet when the seats are down. Additionally, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 6.5-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker audio system and Bluetooth.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan dimensions measure 185″ L x 72″ W x 66″ H, while the Atlas measures 198″ L x 78″ W x 70″ H. Tiguan models include 17-, 19- and 20-inch wheels, while the Atlas comes with 18-, 19- and 21-inch wheels. However, both VW SUVs can be chosen with seven paint colors.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has not been evaluated by the NHTSA yet but is a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. In comparison, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas was given a perfect five-star safety rating from the NHTSA and received “Good” ratings in every IIHS crashworthiness test. The new Tiguan comes standard with a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning and rear cross traffic alert. These are the same standard features found with the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas models.
