You know you want a new VW sedan in Philadelphia, but how do you choose between the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. At Cherry Hill Volkswagen, we compare these two premium models, looking closely at the pricing, interior features, exterior dimensions, performance and safety features.
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta S MSRP starts at $18,995, but there are also four other trim levels to choose from. In comparison, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI starts at $27,430 with your option of two trim levels.
The 2021 VW Jetta is equipped with a 147-horsepower turbocharged engine that produces 184 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, you have the choice between a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s only available with front-wheel-drive. The 2021 VW Jetta GLI includes a more powerful 228-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 258 lb-ft of torque. All GLI models include a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or the manual from the standard Jetta.
The new Volkswagen Jetta is rated at 30/40 mpg. However, the GLI isn’t rated as high because of the more powerful engine. With a GTI and manual transmission, you can expect 25/33 mpg or 25/32 with the automatic.
Both Jetta models contain room for five, but there’s a difference in cargo space. The Jetta has a 14.1 cubic-foot trunk with a 60/40-split rear seat. However, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI hatchback offers 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the back row and 52.7 cubic feet when those seats are folded flat. The GLI also includes some red trim to change the interior appearance.
Standard features abound in both models, including a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot and Bluetooth. The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta also includes two USB ports and a four-speaker sound system, while the GLI contains one USB port, a six-speaker sound system and VW’s Car-Net telematics system.
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta dimensions measure 185″ L x 71″ W x 57″ H with 16- or 17-inch wheels and your choice of seven exterior paint colors. In comparison, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI dimensions measure 185″ L x 71″ W x 57″ H with 18-inch wheels and eight exterior paint colors.
The NHTSA awarded the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta a perfect five-star safety rating, while the IIHS gave this car a perfect “Good” rating in all crash tests. While the GLI hasn’t been rated by the IIHS, the NHTSA did offer a perfect five-star safety rating.
While both models are equipped with lots of safety equipment, the GLI includes more standard technology. The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta offers a rearview camera, but you can upgrade with many other options. However, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI includes rain-sensing wipers, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking, in addition to that rearview camera.
